Dr. Erta Priadi Wirawijaya, a specialist in the heart and blood vessels, issues a warning about the hazards of stress and how it might raise the risk of heart disease.
"Stress can cause stress chemicals to be released, including adrenaline, which raises blood pressure. According to him, a significant risk factor for heart disease is high blood pressure, as reported by ANTARA in a debate on World Heart Day 2023.
Stress, according to Erta, can also impact heart rate.
When under stress, some persons experience a faster heartbeat (tachycardia).
According to him, if this condition persists for a long time, the workload on the heart may increase.
The public health professional added that stress can also cause other stress chemicals, such cortisol, to increase in addition to adrenaline.
Erta claims that cortisol can have an impact on the body's metabolism and raise blood sugar levels, both of which can harm the health of blood vessels.
"Chronic stress can also cause the body to become inflamed. Because it can harm artery walls and raise the likelihood that atherosclerotic plaque will form, chronic inflammation is a risk factor for heart disease, according to the expert.
Erta noted that this is why people who are under stress frequently have a tendency to engage in bad behaviour, which might raise the risk of heart disease, such overeating, drinking too much alcohol, or smoking.
He went on to say that stress can interfere with sleeping patterns. Heart disease risk is increased by inadequate or interrupted sleep.
It's crucial to keep in mind that everyone reacts to stress differently and that not everyone will feel the same consequences. Stress can, however, raise the risk of heart disease in susceptible people if it becomes persistent and is poorly controlled, he said.
Heart disease is the leading cause of mortality in Indonesia, according to Eva Susanti, director of prevention and control of non-communicable diseases at the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes).
In specifics, ischemic heart disease (heart attack) was 14.38 percent and stroke was 19.42 percent.
In order to reduce the death rate from cardiovascular disease, the Ministry of Health is adopting a number of programmes in honour of World Heart Day, which is observed every September 29.
Some of these techniques involve a variety of elements, including case management, early identification, health education and promotion, and rehabilitation incorporating many programmes and industries.
With regard to "Achieving a Healthy Heart, Strong Indonesia," Eva Susanti stated that "successful education, promotion, early detection, case management, and rehabilitation of heart disease prevention and control programmes must be carried out comprehensively and continuously through cross-program, cross-sector, private sector, professional organisations, academics, and other elements.
